Q.Visa and Mastercard are said to have complained that India is using nationalism to promote the Rupay-based cards. Anything wrong with that?

 

A. Not at all. Aspiration for self-reliance isn’t an anti-thesis of globalisation or be conflated with hyper-nationalism. The quest for Indian brands to be globally competitive is fine. Self-reliance is inclusive and global market-facing approach and not closing the door to the globe. In a ‘Flat World’ (courtesy Thomas Friedman’s book on the subject) and a laissez-faire world order, complaining isn’t always the best route to compete. Besides, competition is good in any market as customers can exercise choice from amongst various options and the fittest survive
