Q. Many years back, the late Dileep Padgaonkar had said in an interview that his is the secondmost important job in the country. Do you think any editor in today’s time will be able to make such a claim?

A. We are inundated with self-proclaimed claims in every sphere of life. And there is nothing wrong in it. Any claim is never put to test for recognition as a universal sobriquet. A figure of speech needn’t be construed as a deterministic acknowledgement of a claim. It was true then and true now also. So, change of time has nothing to do it. Every claim is a function of a prevailing dominant societal environ. Hence, looking for relevance of a past claim to a new social setting isn’t a fair comparison.
