Bhaskar DasThere are times when we ask a question and we think we are fairly clearly about what we are trying to ask. But when we re-read the question, we figure it’s not that all-clear. So we hope you get what we’re trying to ask. Presenting the August 11 edition of Das ka Dum with Dr Bhaskar Das…

Q. There is a popular Hindi song that goes: Kuch toh log kahenge, logo(a)n ka kaam hai kehna suggesting ‘People will always have a view on things, because that’s what they are meant to do’. Do you think that is something one can say about the news media too – as in it will say/do what it has to, regardless of what you say?

A. Why are you specifically mentioning a genre of media? It is a universal reality that our external perception of reality and our individual internal narrative are generally in sync. And it’s also universal to extrapolate those individual perceptions to the whole universe. One can’t gloss over the existence  of multiple perspectives on any issue and we need to leave the decision-making to individuals as they can arrive at their own conclusions. Nothing can be thrust on anyone. Not in today’s day and age when social media itself is a potent force to have its own mind.
