Q. A reader asks (and I share her sentiments): you are almost always positive about the future of the media business, but not so in the recent past with your forward-looking statements in the responses on what the industry will be like post-Covid?

A. I am not pessimistic. I have become a tad realistic. The key challenge for any corporate is how to formulate a viable and sustainable strategy in the face of uncertainty. Uncertainty is so all-pervasive that one has to dynamically imagine multiple alternative realities to sense and shape what happens in the coming days. Besides, challenges are unique by sectors and regions. Hence, I must admit that I can’t be prescriptive. I couldn’t visualise  the outcome of balancing efficiency and innovation in a market situation that is so volatile on multiple issues. So it’s not pessimistic. It borders more on pragmatism.
