Q. As President of BCCL and having led the organisation and various teams for several years, how do you compare the current crop of media leaders versus those who existed in the good old days

A. First a clarification: I never led BCCL. I was assigned a task and I treated it as a fiduciary responsibility like a servant/ soldier and tries to do justice to the confidence reposed in me. Secondly, every leader has a unique style and there is nothing like a good or bad style. And every comparison is odious and hence I desist from it as part of my professional ethics. What is critical to consider for any leadership style is actual delivery (preferably with a heart). And every delivery is predicated on internal and external opportunities and overall sentiment in the economy. This interplay of factors sometime acts as a headwind or tailwind for every business. Some gritty and unreasonable (a positive quality as the leader goes against the holy grail of usual business axioms) leader bucks the trend.

So, there is no deterministic leadership style/formula of successful leadership. And, of course,  no leader can extrapolate a past success to future. Nostalgic leaders can’t create a future.
