1 Minute View: Fear of not being #1?

11 Jan,2019

1 Minute ViewDoes the Indian cricket team not play the World Cup because it isn’t sure about winning the Cup or doesn’t want to lose it? That its reputation could go for a toss if it isn’t #1.

Ditto with a team which has been #1 in the Olympics or Asian Games or Commonwealth. Or a debating competition or quiz show.

The team in question may have reason to guard its reputation, but it’s a silly and unfortunate reason.

We don’t know what the reasons are for some teams to stay away from the Advertising Club’s Effie’s Awards, but if the Fear of not being #1 or #2 are indeed the reasons, then we think it’s time for someone to counsel them.

The Effie Awards are happening tonight in Mumbai and while Ogilvy is participating and so is last year’s #1 McCann, Lowe Lintas (and Mullen Lintas) are staying away. We don’t know the reasons for Lowe to not participate for the second year in a row. As one senior adperson told us, just because an agency is not #1 or #2 doesn’t mean that it is not committed to creating effective advertising. Well said.

So we are going to cheer both Ogilvy and McCann regardless of who is crowned #1 this evening. We will also cheer the various others who win and don’t win. As also the folks at the MullenLowe Lintas Group’s two agencies… they do good, effective work too.
