Stop cribbing about infra, Mumbaikars. Go out and vote!

21 Feb,2017

As many as 10 municipal corporations go to vote in Maharashtra today. These include the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (or BMC), Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation, Nashik Municipal Corporation, Solapur Municipal Corporation, Akola Municipal Corporation, Amravati Municipal Corporation and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). No, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) elections aren’t being held concurrently.

Given that a large number of our readers are from Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and PCMC, here’s an earnest request: Please go out and vote. Vote you must, so what if it’s for a candidate you don’t know.

Agreed Mumbai gets a raw deal on attention to civic infrastructure. While the city contributes considerably in the form of taxes, the facilities that we see here suck.

While Delhi is the national capital and deserves all the pampering, so what if the Central powers don’t spend too much attention on our city. If we get a corporation that works, corporators who care, we can match the pace of development that any large urban centre deserves.

It’s not that Mumbai doesn’t have infra. Our public transport systems are possibly the best in the country. Our city is one of the safest. Law and order is under control and it’s a great place to live in.

Now it’s in our hands to ensure that we get a local government that can give us the city that we deserve.

Let’s go to the polling booths and vote. Find out which polling booth you need to go to. So what if you don’t know who the candidate is. You may not care much for the municipal corporation elections but remember a good candidate and party in power can transform our city. Good road, cleanliness and hygiene, focus on public transport and green spaces, planned development… the list can go on and on.

Malls, multiplexes and hotels are good to have but let’s not fool ourselves that they are symbols of a 22nd Century India . We need: broad, pothole-free roads, to ensure that new structures have ample space for parking and security checks, that there is no unauthorised parking, two-three-lane parking must stop… etc etc.

All of this is possible only if we have responsible elected members in the corporation. So please do vote!
